School Semester PAWS Academy

Under the leadership of our Education Manager, PAWS Academy offers children the opportunity to participate in structured education about companion animals and engage in volunteer activities during the school year.

Junior PAWS Academy is for kids between 6 and 10 years old.  Children learn how to interact safely with animals and develop compassion for members of the animal kingdom.  Activities include grooming animals and pet-related crafts, all while making new friends—both human and animal!

Senior PAWS Academy is for kids 11 to 15 years of age.  Children will be introduced to the key principles of animal rescue, basic obedience training, and how to provide essential care for animal companions.  They will also learn about different animal breeds and temperaments, and come to understand the importance of choosing an animal with an energy level that matches that of your family.

Fee:                       $25 per semester for either Junior or Senior PAWS Academy.

Structure:               Groups meet for 1 hour after school, once every other week.

Group size is limited to 10 participants, so early registration is recommended.

Junior Volunteers is a course for 14- and 15-year-olds, and is open to those who have attended PAWS Academy or Off Leash Youth Camp (unless there are special circumstances).  This is a structured volunteer opportunity, in which participants are assigned tasks related to shelter maintenance and animal care.  Volunteers supervised by our education manager with increasing independence permitted.  This is the best bridge to becoming a regular volunteer at age 16.

Fee:                       Free, but participants are asked to purchase a Junior Volunteer T-shirt, which is $10

Structure:                   Weekly on Wednesday, 4:30-6:00PM

Group size is limited to 15 participants.

Brief interviews are required for interested participants.
